About the Town Team
Town teams are common organisations in the UK with more than 300 listed by the Government. It is not the first time a Town Team has been started in Clitheroe but with 16 different groups represented we intend to make this new initiative a great success. Many consider Town Teams as a type of pressure group that has a simple focus, to improve the town. They are pressure groups because they have no spending power but can bring attention to the most important matters and actions that are needed to improve a town. The expertise and thoughts of diverse groups that include, for example, representatives from the Sixth Form, provide contrast with the skills and experience of the traditional decision making bodies.
Are they democratic? It is impractical to run an election system for town teams but they should be open to new members joining and certainly ideas being provided by the community. In 2021 the idea for the Town Team was hatched around the belief that the town needed fresh impetus to emerge from COVID. Cllr Sue Hind invited representatives of the groups to the first meeting and the group was formed. This was the process for starting the TT and since then it has gone from strength to strength and now represents more than 15 sectors of town life. It is open to all and new members will be voted on to the Town Team by the existing members. The Town Team welcomes greater representation.
